Yumé, Vladimir Putin’s dog that scares the press

Just before an official visit to Japan, Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced his dog, named Yumé. She is of the Akita Inu race, and the President showed her to two Japanese journalists who were interviewing him in the Kremlin in Moscow.

The sudden appearance of the official pet startled reporters a little;  in their own words, they were “surprised”. Vladimir Putin said that as journalists wanted to see Yumé, he decided to present her live and in color.

Japanese journalists said: “we are delighted to hear that Yumé is so happy, but it surprised us and scared us a little at the beginning of our meeting with the President.” Putin acknowledged that he was “responsible for the scare”, but said his dog was very obedient. The President justified the animal’s reaction, because in the place there were a lot of people, technical teams and sounds that she didn’t know. But he felt very grateful for his four-legged friend, as she performed her protective duties to perfection.

The president of Russia won the dog as a gift in 2012. It was as a token of gratitude for the help the world’s largest country gave Japan after the devastating tsunami of 2011. Akita City Hall representatives handed over the puppy and then later Putin named her Yumé.

As she grew up, the little dog became the President’s best friend. So she defends him tooth and nail (if necessary).

This breed of Japanese origin is treated in the Japanese country as National Heritage (as well as Sumo and geisha). It is one of the most appreciated dogs as it is considered a good luck charm. Its name, Akita, comes from the eponymous city located on Honshu Island. The word “Inu” means “dog” in Japanese.

The first time the Akita Inu were mentioned was in the 15th century (although some claim that there were already 4,000 years ago). At first, he was used as a hunting dog. Then, by the warriors, to defend and attack. During World War II, Akita females were bred to German Shepherds and the puppies were sold to the United States. This was the origin of the North American Akita breed.

Solid and compact in structure, they have small, rounded ears. Its thick tail is folded up, has powerful ends, heavy bones and smooth, fine coat (daily brushing is required). Typical Akita Inu colors are white, grey, beige and striped.

As for its behavior, it is a docile, independent and active animal. It is very obedient but not submissive. One of its main qualities is loyalty to its owner. He feels really attached to his owner and can be suspicious of everyone else. Akita Inu is a very guardian and has the ability to remain patient in the face of stressful situations.

They are large dogs, but they can live in places that are not so large, as long as they can exercise every day. They are not very barkers and actively defend their territory. They learn quickly, are vigorous, love children, become the dominant leader if there are other dogs, and are not used to destroying objects when they are puppies.
