Many people miss their pets when they go on vacation. Transporting them, especially if they are felines, doesn’t seem like a simple option in places where there are lots of people, sand and water. The good news is that, in Sardinia, they have reserved at least one of the beaches for cats.
This beach is called Su Pallosu and is something of a feline sanctuary. Its location in the west of the Italian island is little known for mass tourism. This allows the 61 cats that inhabit these shores to roam freely over rocks and low cliffs.
What is life like for cats in Su Pallosu?
Su Pallosu beach, in the center of the Mediterranean, is presented as a small paradise for humans. However, its true inhabitants are very protected against all the insects and rodents that roam the area. The cats on this beach coexist peacefully and in total freedom.
Cats arriving in this corner of the world are attended by the Associazione Culturale Amici di Su Pallosu. This non-profit organization is responsible for feeding and medical care for the small cats.
The means by which this charitable association is funded is through activities that encourage microtourism. Although guided tours are completely free, income comes from selling food, accessories, gifts or the modest accommodation that is offered.
Cats and female cats are neutered to prevent these felines from reproducing indefinitely. Currently, in addition to these 61 feline settlers, caregivers expressed that, at the moment, they do not accept the arrival of more guests.
Su Pallosu’s Story
Su Pallosu has only six human inhabitants. As for the presence of cats, the story of their origin on this picturesque beach goes back to the 80s. As in fairy tales for children, it all started on this beach with an invasion of rats. The massive presence of rodents led tuna fishermen in the region to fight this pest with a good number of cats.
Cats became heroes. The inhabitants took care of them and fed them with fish ; the climate was favorable to the characteristics of the island, its coasts and its beach. Since then, they have been on one of the most beautiful beaches for cats in the world.
Although there are very few visits to this beach on the Italian island, there are already many people who have left their comments in the traveler forums. And what “catter” wouldn’t feel at ease surrounded by the beauty of the landscape and the purring of cats!
